Our Story
Anchor 1

Shortly after moving to Seattle in 1995, Kimberly Leeper became an environmental educator with Seattle Parks and other local organizations while working as a public school teacher.

Kimberly always loved native plants and wildlife habitats, and her role as a naturalist educator led her to become a Native Plant Steward through the Washington Native Plant Society in 2005. After further study at South Seattle College, she started her own business selling native plants out of her home and specializing in native plant landscapes. (read more about Kimberly here)

In 2015, Kimberly and Aaron Armstrong, a former Japanese and Chinese tea importer and purveyor, now a permaculture designer in Seattle, were brought together by a well-known local permaculture educator.

An expert in soil systems, soil regeneration, and in particular the method know as hugelkultur, Aaron’s integrated designs, which draw aesthetically from English and Asian tea gardens, drew immediate interest from the community, where he created an urban farm and community education center in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood. (read more about Aaron here)

Kimberly and Aaron connected and hit it off immediately. Soon after discussing the possibilities of working together their team efforts started gaining momentum. They shared the same mission: create breathtaking gardens for Seattle homeowners using permaculture ethics and principles and integrated design..

While working together, the pair discovered not only did they learn a lot from each other, but they were having a blast! The formal business discussions began and resulted in the duo becoming business partners, co-founding Oasis Edible Naturescapes in August of 2016.

In addition to providing top-notch work for their clients, Kimberly and Aaron share a vision of action towards community building, food justice, resource conservation, and leadership in the Seattle area community for permaculture-related consultation, coaching, education, design, installation, and maintenance.

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a system of agricultural and social design principles centered on stimulating or directly utilizing the patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems to create a permanent human society. It’s based on how nature operates, the ways of indigenous people, and incorporates science and modern technologies when sustainable.

Oasis Edible Naturescapes is built upon the three core ethics of permaculture:

  • Care for the Earth: Regenerating the Earth’s biosphere, rebuilding natural capital

  • Care for the People: Respect, communication, compassion, empathy, tolerance

  • Return Surplus and Set Limits to Growth – Take only what we truly need; share the surplus with the world’s most at-risk, our neighbors and communities

How Do I Benefit from Permaculture?
Anchor 3

By following a combination of our holistic approach and the 12 principles of permaculture design, there are many ways you’ll benefit from working with us, including:

  • Getting tangible, useful rewards (e.g. fruits and veggies!)

  • Less maintenance over time than other types of gardening

  • Using fewer resources (water, fertilizers, etc.)

  • Helping the environment by producing no waste

But the biggest benefit? Putting effective, long-term systems in place for compost, water, soil and plants -- systems that you’re actually a part of, resulting in better functioning ecosystems.

"I wanted to create a native garden and was particularly interested in creating a habitat for birds and other critters and promoting pollination. Kimberly and Aaron explained all the possibilities and gave me options based on me not wanting to do all the initial work myself and my desire for a low maintenance garden. The best part was the enthusiasm and dedication. They’re super clear communicators who love what they do. They’re fun to work with and talk to, great listeners, we always have really good conversations. They’re super knowledgeable and I give them my highest recommendation." ~Rachel Price, West Seattle
